The
Virginia Beach Branch of the NAACP was established in
October 1941. The organization has fought for freedom,
justice and equality for over 60 years. The growth and
development of the largest city in
Virginia
brings new challenges to the cause of civil rights.
As the Branch celebrates its 65th
year in 2006 its main focus is centered around economic
justice and inclusion in all aspects of the city.
The
branch opened its first headquarters office in October 2001
at
868 North Newtown Road
to provide the infrastructure necessary to meet today’s
challenges.
The
branch has worked to increase the number of African American
judges in the city’s court system, the number of city
contracts awarded to African American businesses and the
number of African American employees in all of the city’s
departments and position levels.
In
the area of public safety, the branch has been a persuasive
force in moving the police and fire departments toward being
representative of the city’s minority population in
recruitment and promotions.
As
a volunteer organization the task is a daunting one but the
results benefit the entire community.
I invite you to join and support the efforts of the
Virginia Beach Branch NAACP.
